Every time I photograph a birth it feels like I am experiencing it for the first time. Watching the laboring mother, the support of a father and a new life coming into this world sends chills through my body and tears stream down my face. Every time I am amazed at this miracle we call life. I feel so honored to be able to photograph this time for families so they can remember their birth and have photos of their little one as he or she enters this world. There is nothing like a baby experiencing the outside world for the first time; their first little cry, their first movements, the struggle for them to open their eyes in the bright light and the little squeaks they make. It’s all so new and gives me the wonder and amazement of a child every time.

Baby Wolfgang had a smooth transition into this world through water. This was my first time experiencing a water birth and it seemed like such an amazing way to labor and give birth. He was born at The New Birth Company in Overland Park, KS. I love how it’s all about the mom and her comfort while delivering there. They let her lay, stand, walk, bathe, drink smoothies, drink water, get a massage anything that will support her and help her deliver her baby. Birth isn’t treated like a medical emergency here, it’s treated as a healthy natural process for the female body to go through. They trust that the body knows what to do and it creates such a calm and supportive environment to deliver in. How much easier would it be to go through such a painful, difficult time with all this loving support and a beautiful room that feels like a hotel room? I highly recommend any woman look into a birth center or a home birth with a midwife, it is such a beautiful way to experience birth.

Why hire a birth photographer?

The day your little one makes it’s way into this world will be one of the most memorable moments in your life. Think of your wedding day. Hiring a birth photographer also allows your birth partner to focus on assisting you and being your support during labor and delivery.

When does the photographer arrive for the birth and how long will they stay?

Notifying Portraits by Lucinda that you are in labor is crucial to ensuring we’re there to photograph your special day. However, we realize calling your photographer is likely going to be the last thing on your mind. Please ask your midwife or nurse to notify Portraits by Lucinda when you arrive at your place of birth and labor is confirmed and also when they feel it’s time to have the photographer arrive to capture the birth. We will photograph a bit of your laboring, the birth process and then stay up to an hour after birth to capture a few more moments.

What can I expect once the photographer arrives?

Our approach is to capture the story, but not to be in it! We will be in the background capturing the moments as they happen, in a fashion that tells your story. We strive to remain unobtrusive and out of the way. We do not bring in big pieces of camera equipment or lighting. It’s simply a photographer with a camera. We believe this approach is appropriate for the intimacy of the setting.

How will the photographer protect my privacy and modesty?

We will photograph your birth in a very beautiful, modest way. We generally do not photograph nudity, except for your little baby and some nursing photos. Additionally, your online gallery will be password protected and your slide show will have a custom link that only you will know.

When and how should I book Portraits by Lucinda?

You should book with us as soon as you know you would like to hire us for your baby’s birth. To book a photographer, please select a package and send in a payment of 50% your package price. The 2nd half is due no later than 30 days
before your “due date”.

This shoot left me speechless and truly inspired! As a photographer I love to photograph something new that challenges me. Photographing this birth was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. This momma worked so hard to deliver this sweet baby and her husband was the best birth coach I have ever seen. There was so much love in the room. Did I mention this labor was completely natural? No drugs, no confining monitors just amazing midwives trusting the design of the female body. This birth is a true testament that natural birth can be an amazing and empowering experience. This momma was smiling all through her labor and even pushing! She wasn’t just smiling she was glowing!!

I have to say birth photography has captured me and I can’t wait to photograph more babies coming into this world!

What an amazing experience! Can I just say I am in LOVE with photographing births! It is so amazing to document a little one coming into this world. I am simply blown away by how the female body is created and designed to birth a baby! Truly a miracle to witness. I have to say I was also very impressed with the staff at the New Birth Company, they made a very relaxing, nourishing and supportive place to birth. I am so glad we have such an amazing birth center in Kansas City!

Below is my first birth I photographed at the New Birth Company! For this particular birth I wasn’t able to photograph the babies entrance into the world but was able to capture some labor shots and then do some portraits when he was just a couple hours old!
